"If we want a 'joy that no man can take from us,' we must find it in something no man can disturb. No element of joy that is subject to human fluctuations can be in the least depended on. The only lasting joy is to be found in the everlasting God. In God alone, I mean, apart from all else; apart from His gifts apart from His blessings, apart from all that can by any possibility change or alter. He alone is unchangeable. He is the same good, loving, tender God 'yesterday, today, and for ever'; and we can rejoice in Him always, whether we are able to rejoice in His gifts and His promises or not."
