Life's Puzzling Pieces

Life's Puzzling Pieces

"As we pass through the dark experiences of life we see only that dark piece. Our experiences resemble a jigsaw puzzle. Here is a black piece, which seems to fit nowhere at all. It does not make sense. Here is a little brighter piece, and other sections of the jigsaw puzzle are dark, and some pitch black, and we cry and moan in these black moments. But by-and-by the Master will take all the pieces, which look so disconnected to us now, and carefully arrange each piece in its proper place, and then we shall see the completed work of Him who makes no mistakes. Listen, when it is all ready, we shall find that the dark pieces of the puzzle were as important in the completion of the full beauty of the pattern as the bright sections. The dark background will only bring out in bolder and more gorgeous relief the figures in the picture, in the center of which will be His lovely face, and around it the experiences of life over which we mourn now but for which we will praise Him then."

Ectopic/tubal Pregnancy Abortion

Recently, I was addressed with the question: "Is abortion acceptable in a case of Ectopic/tubal pregnancy?"  Honestly, I didn't know that much about it. All I could really say on the subject was what I’d just heard from other people’s perception of it. So, today I did my research. I was amazed by what I learned. The truth is, the more I study and educate myself about health in general, the more I see why it is so important to do so. You almost have to be your own doctor, because you cannot simply believe what others will tell you or blindly follow the flow of society. I hope this information is maybe helpful to you, and if nothing else, educational. So, I would encourage you, reader, to research and to study for yourself. It is good to know what we believe and why.

So, what is Ectopic Pregnancy?
Definition of ectopic

  •     Pregnancy with the fertilized embryo implanted on any tissue other than the uterine lining
  •         95% of ectopics are in the tube, 1.5% abdominal, 0.5% ovarian and 0.03% are in the                 cervix
  •         Only a 2% chance that a pregnancy will be Ectopic/tubal

My perception of "Ectopic/tubal pregnancy" from all I'd ever heard was that it was a case where, if not somehow prevented, the baby would inevitably always die and the mother could possibly then die as well. MOST people think this is true and therefore use an abortive, either drug or surgery, to immediately end the pregnancy. If the baby is dying anyway, and the life of the mother is therefore then put at risk, why would you hesitate to abort the baby? Although this thinking logically does make sense, it didn't sit right with me. How could it ever be acceptable to murder a baby? It couldn't be.

Every "medical website" said the same thing. With Ectopic pregnancy there is no other option than to abort the baby immediately before you put yourself at fatal risk. The doctors would advocate that you go in for emergency abortive surgery. A few websites admitted to certain "exceptions" or "rare cases" where the baby somehow survived outside the mother's uterus. But those were rare and somewhat unacceptable.

When I came across a story of a mother that safely kept her Ectopic baby full term, I was pleasantly surprised and it opened an avenue of information! Here is the account:

Rare baby survives outside womb: Montreal doctor
CBC News Posted: Aug 12, 2003 10:16 AM ET Last Updated: Aug 12, 2003 10:16 AM ET

Surgeons in Montreal performed a C-section and found a baby managed to grow and develop outside his mother's uterus. Dionne Grant, 29, and her newborn son should be going home later this week. Although she is camera shy, Grant wanted the world to see her baby. He does not yet have a name. Dr. Robert Sabbah, head of obstetrics and gynecology at Sacr-Coeur Hospital, said he only discovered the problem after deciding to perform an emergency caesarean section on the Jamaican tourist last week.
"When I opened the cavity I quickly discovered that the uterus was not like it was supposed to be," said Sabbah. "As soon as I explored the abdominal cavity I noticed there were feet in the cavity just floating around. So as fast as I could I took out the baby."
He said that abdominal ectopic pregnancies occur in one in 10,000 pregnancies. In 99 per cent of the cases, the babies die. There are only a dozen similar cases in the world, according to obstetricians. Doctors believe the baby survived because the placenta glued itself to the top of the uterus, accessing blood to nourish the baby. Sabbah said he's thrilled to have been part of the surgery and even more thrilled that both his patients are doing so well.

Ectopic/tubal pregnancy baby survivors actually aren't as impossible as I would have thought. I think the reason they are more uncommon, is because woman are told that the "abortion of the baby" is the ONLY option and therefore, the baby is never even given the chance to try to live. I was shocked by how many stories I came across where the mother actually was somehow able to carry her baby even outside the uterus lining. Weird. But it is possible. It is most common, however, that the baby will naturally die. At approximately 8 to 9 weeks most tubal pregnancies will rupture. This can be dangerous for the mother, with risks of hemorrhaging, internal bleeding, and possible infection, and it is extremely important that she gets medical help; although, it is still not unheard of that both the baby and the mother survives even a tubal rupture. (I'm honestly unsure how that works, but I do believe the baby has to be past 28 weeks.)

So, is it actually as dangerous a threat to the mother's life as is commonly made out to be?

No, not really. And while there is a chance that the mother could die, it isn't as high as I would have thought. I found this particular website, and the information from it, extremely helpful. http://www.personhoodinitiative.com/articles.html

The actual survival rate is more likely to be 99.4%.

A more accurate percentage could be obtained by considering that deaths associated with ectopic pregnancies only make up about 6% of the yearly maternal deaths in America. If this figure were to be applied to the maternal mortality rate of southern Israel, we would derive that there were .03 ectopic related deaths per year for that region. When that figure is divided by an average of 4.8 tubal ruptures per year, we arrive at the conclusion that a woman in southern Israel has a 99.4% chance of surviving an ectopic pregnancy which is not aborted prior to rupture.

A similar calculation for America produces a lowest possible minimum of 97.7% survival.

In addition, we could calculate the maternal risk from the total number of heterotopic pregnancies (twins with one child in the womb and the other being ectopic) in America. According to Dr. Tenore of the Northwestern University Medical School in Chicago, this type of pregnancy occurs in 1 out of every 2,600 pregnancies, and 50% of them (1 out of every 5,200 pregnancies) "are identified only after tubal rupture." According to the American Pregnancy Association, there are approximately 6 million pregnancies per year in the US. Therefore, there are an average of 1,154 heterotopic pregnancies every year in America which are not even discovered much less treated prior to tubal rupture. The CDC reported that there are an average of 26.3 maternal deaths per year that are ectopic related. If we assumed that all of these ectopic related deaths were the result of an undiagnosed heterotopic pregnancy (a condition which only makes up 1% of the total number of ectopic pregnancies), then we would still arrive at a maternal survival rate of 97.7%.

The claim that an unborn child cannot survive an Ectopic pregnancy:

a. Between 1809 and 1935, there were 316 reported live births from ectopic pregnancies.

Two OBGYNs in New York, Dr.’s Hellman and Simon, published details on 316 ectopic pregnancies which resulted in live births between 1809 and 1935. Only half of these children survived their first week of life, but these births occurred before the development of the first neonatal intensive care unit, and most of them before the discovery of penicillin in 1928.  With modern technology, it is likely that many more would have survived.

b. With modern technology, there have been even more of these births in recent years in spite of the insistence that abortion is the only viable treatment.

In September of 1999, Ronan Ingram was successfully delivered via c-section.  Ronan had implanted in one of his mother’s fallopian tubes which subsequently ruptured as he grew into the abdominal cavity. In May of 2008, Durga Thangarajah was born after spending a full nine months in her mother’s ovary. Sage Dalton was born in July of 1999 after developing in the amniotic membrane outside her mother’s womb. Billy Jones was born in 2008 after developing in his mother’s abdominal cavity. Many additional reports could be given.

The claim that termination is the only treatment for ectopic pregnancies that is recognized by the medical profession:

Many OBGYNs have recommended allowing ectopic pregnancies to resolve on their own.
Dr.’s Sapuri and Klufio, for example, have recommended that women discovered to have an ectopic pregnancy prior to 28 weeks of gestation should be admitted to a hospital and closely monitored.  They stress that blood transfusion facilities should be readily available in case of hemorrhage, and they suggest that once the child has reached 28 weeks of gestation, he should be delivered surgically.

An Ectopic/tubal pregnancy certainly could be dangerous and definitely isn't ideal, but it isn't impossible either. Abortion isn't the only option, as doctors conclude and people ignorantly and blindly believe. It shouldn't even be an option. If there is still a possibility that you could save your Ectopic/tubal pregnancy...why wouldn't you try? If there was even a small chance that you could somehow keep the life of your baby, isn't that something to consider? To most doctors and pro-choice representatives, it is seen only as a "blob of tissue" that could possibly be a fatal risk, so they insist on immediate removal. And I think maybe even most pro-life christians just blindly believe what the doctor tells them to do. But it is a life. And outside the mother's uterus or not, it is worth fighting for.

Life

I recently did a post on abortion.  If you read this post you know that most abortions are performed in the first and second trimester.  Specifically the 5th to 12th week.  I thought I would research the development of babies during these trimesters.  These sweet lives are undeniably more than "blobs of tissue".

(The photographs below are of live babies.  This content is appropriate for all ages.)

First trimester development (weeks since LMP):

From fertilization: a new human embryo exists, already a boy or girl.

(Photo of 5 week embryo)
5 weeks: heart is beating and brain is developing.

6 weeks: baby has head, chest and abdomen, is ½ cm long and arms and legs have started to develop.

7 weeks: baby's brain has all the divisions, subdivisions and cavities as in an infant's brain; face and fingers are taking shape and when face is touched, embryo reflexively moves away.

8 weeks: he/she is 1cm long.
(Photo of 8 week old embryo)
9 weeks:baby can move hands and neck and may get hiccups.

10 weeks: baby is almost 11/4 inches, makes startle movements and general movements of whole body: all fingers and toes are fully formed, hairs on eyebrows and other areas of face appear.

11 weeks: baby is a fetus, can sigh, stretch and starts sucking thumb. His/her face, palms of hands, and soles of feet are sensitive to light touch.

12 weeks: baby is 3 inches long with all major body parts and apart from the tiny size, closely resembles a  newborn.

13 weeks: baby can make complex facial expressions and by end of this week will be almost 4 inches, having grown almost an inch every week since 10 weeks.

(Photo of 13 week Embryo)

Second trimester development (weeks since LMP):

Abortions are performed in the 2nd trimester in some states.  Our nearest Planned Parenthood in Spokane WA performs abortions up to 17 weeks.  Check the stats for your state or country so you can educate others and save lives!
(These links go to pages without any graphic images)

At 14 weeks: the fetus is 5 inches long.

15 weeks: baby responds to light touch virtually anywhere on his/her body.

16 weeks: baby is almost 7 inches long.

(Photo of 16 week Embryo)

18 weeks: if poked with a needle, the fetus releases stress hormones.

(Photo of 20 week embryo)
20 weeks: baby is 10 inches long with eyebrows and head hair.
21 weeks: baby has breathing cycles.
22 weeks: baby can hear sounds. His/her skin and all its structures are completely formed. At 22 weeks the fetus may survive outside the womb with specialist care.

(Photo of 22 week old embryo)

25 weeks: breathing motions are more frequent, shows blink-startle response.

(Photo of Embryo at 26 weeks)
26 weeks: eyelids open.

How Could I Help?

"Open thy mouth for the dumb in the cause of all such as are appointed to destruction"  Proverbs 31:8

How Can I Help?

 Political/World Issues

How We Can Help

Guest writer Chris Hutto  shares how we can practically be a voice for the voiceless.

We know that as Christians we are commanded by God to witness. We also know that as Christians we need to speak out for those being “drawn to death” through abortion. But what does that look like practically in everyday life? How do we go about spreading the Gospel? How do we abolish abortion? After writing about these subjects I have had a lot of people ask me what we can do to fulfill what God has commanded of us.

First of all I have to say that the work of abortion abolition is not that complicated. Truly there are lots of things we can be doing but we have to keep a few things in perspective for it to be effective.

Our goal should always be the Gospel.

If we want a lasting change in the hearts of people we have to show them the cross. You can convince a lost person to be “pro-life” but if they are not shown God's law they will have no foundation to base their new belief on and will be easily persuaded back to the world's way of thinking. Abortion isn't wrong because babies are human or because they feel pain but because God says it is wrong. Every unborn child is made in the image of God. (Gen. 9:6) People don't need to be shown that abortion is ethically inconsistent with human rights but that those that commit an abortion are transgressing against the perfect law of a holy and just God. Abortion is a sin but God can and will forgive because of His wondrous mercy!

Abortion abolition has to be the personal work of believers.

Many people believe that Christian ministries should be the work of our spiritual leaders and pastors but the Bible shows us that the work of God is the work of the Christian. We shouldn't wait for others to do right before we do what Christ has commanded. We shouldn't subcontract our Christianity out to special groups or those in the “ministry.” Just because we give money to charity or missions doesn't exempt us from participation.

Our message should extend far beyond that of the mainstream pro-life groups.

Most pro-life organizations focus on the humanity of the unborn children instead of the commands of a righteous God. It is good to recognize that unborn children are human beings but that shouldn't be the main reason abortion is wrong. How do you prove to the lost and willfully ignorant majority that the unborn are babies? Do you mention that they feel pain or that they have a heart beat? Maybe you could mention that they have their own distinct DNA or that they dream. Does this prove that abortion is wrong? Do not animals share these same things? Most pro-life groups make abortion a political issue instead of the sin of murder. Our focus shouldn't be regulating abortions but abolishing it. Slavery was abolished in England without bloodshed why can't abortion be abolished in the same way?

So now that we have set the foundation for abortion abolition now let me write about what we can do about it. I need to say that everything we do must be done in the Spirit. Without God we can do nothing. Truly it would be pointless. The Spirit does the drawing. We are commanded to walk in the Spirit and because of this relationship with God our response to the world around us will be effective in reaching them for Christ. If the work of the Lord is done in the flesh it is a waste of time and will actually be harmful to the name of Christ. I will give you a detailed list of some of the things that I have done or have seen others do that is effective in the work of abortion abolition. Of course it doesn't have to be limited to this list and if anyone has any other ideas I would love to hear about them.

Prayer.

Psalm 6:9 “The LORD hath heard my supplication; the LORD will receive my prayer.” James 5:16 “The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.”

Philippians 4:6 “Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. “

1 John 5:14 “And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us:”

Do we believe in the power of prayer? Through Christ's death on the cross the veil was rent which led to the Holiest of all. Now we have direct access into the throne room of God. (Matthew 27:51; Hebrews 9:3; Hebrews 4:16) We are commanded to come boldly unto God. We are the children of God. He desires to give us good
things. We love the unborn but how much more does God love those tiny children that He personally is forming and creating in the womb? Prayer isn't some ritual but a conversation with our Father. We need to pray to God that he would work mightily on behalf of those being drawn to death. Abortion can be abolished but it will take a miracle so why would we ever want to exclude the one and only Miracle Worker?

Speaking out.

Proverbs 31:8 “Open thy mouth for the dumb in the cause of all such as are appointed to destruction.”

We have to be the voice for the voiceless. Who else is going to? They can't speak for themselves. God will hold us accountable for whether or not we did this very thing. We can't leave the work of abortion abolition to the dedicated few or we will never see it done. Every believer must speak out for the unborn.

James 1:27 says, “Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world.” How much more fatherless can a child be than the one being destroyed at the abortion mills by their own parents?

They have a physical dad but they do not have a father. We can speak out by first talking to our family and friends about the sin of abortion. We can encourage our Pastor to preach against it. We can go to the high schools and talk to the children about it. You would be amazed at how open many of the high school kids are to hearing about abortion and the gospel if we will just only take the time to converse with them. One of the best ways to start a conversation with some one that you have just met is to ask for their opinion on abortion. Most people love to give their opinion and most of the time will allow you to give yours. To do these things you will have to face a lot of fears but it is always worth it. Philippians 4:13 says, “I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.”

Write about it.
One of the ways we speak out is through writing. Most of us write emails and texts all the time but what do we write for the unborn? We may think that we don't have enough time but we truly make time to the things we

want to do. If you have Facebook maybe that could be your way of speaking out for the unborn. We will write about our vacation or our newest epiphany why not spend some time writing about important things. You may lose FB “friends” but again, it's worth it. Maybe we could write an email to all our contacts encouraging them to take some time out of their day to research the abortion problem. There are sometimes opportunities to write in a local newspaper. What kind of impact would it have on our state if every Christian wrote their Representative or Senator and told them that abortion must stop?   [I would be more than willing for you to use maidarise@blogspot.com as an outlet for any writings you would like to post on abortion.  Please just contact me if you would like to use this blog as an outlet.  Believe it or not, Maid Arise actually does have quite a few readers according to statistics. :) ]

Holding Signs.

For some people this might be a bit intimidating because you are expressing your belief in a very public way. I
understand but this is one of the best ways to start a dialog with people. Protests and demonstrations have been one of America's most common tactics in bringing awareness to important issues.

I'm not saying that we should start a traditional protest with chants and slogans but standing out in the public places like side walks and parks with signs starts many wonderful discussions with people who probably wouldn't have taken the time to even think about the issue of abortion. I have had quite a few great talks with people that after talking had a different perspective on it. They really had to think about their position and why they believed it. I was also able to share the Gospel with them. It is such a blessing to be able to see the light come on in their head when they hear the true Gospel of Christ for the first time. Most people know who Christ is but many have never been shown that He is their Savior.

Handing out tracts and drop cards.

This is a great way to bring awareness to the abortion issue and to share the Gospel. This is also a good way for someone to engage in evangelism that may be afraid to talk with someone face to face. Sometimes after a conversation with someone I will give them a track so they can continue to learn about what I was just sharing with them. Tracks are great to hand out at events. You can hand out hundreds in just a few minutes. Drop cards
are also great. As there name implies you don't even have to hand them to people. You can just drop them anywhere. The drop cards we use for abortion abolition are just the right size for putting in the credit card slot on gas pumps. You can leave tracks in library books or waiting rooms. Living Waters has a great selection of Gospel tracks on their website with a solid Gospel message. We use drop cards from ahagear.com which is Abolish Human Abortion's online store. (Some drop cards on their site have abortion images.)

Abortion “Clinic” outreach.

This truly is a combination of all these things. This is where you must be prepared for spiritual warfare. Because of the situation people's emotions are heightened. You will be able to warn the children's parents one last time before they destroy it. We must have answers for the mothers for they have all the reasons in the world to justify their actions. We must be compassionate for these women but also bold for the truth.

High school Outreach

Again this is a combination of the above. Many people call the clinic work the Front lines of abortion abolition but truly it starts at the high schools. This is the next generation. These are the people being lied to. Many have already had abortions before they reach the age of eighteen. Amazingly, many are open to talking about abortion and the Gospel. The children in the high schools are encouraged in their promiscuity. They often have no respect for sexual purity or the life of the unborn. They must be warned and the works of darkness exposed.

Voting.

Abortion isn't just a political issue but because of the callous attitude of politicians it must be addressed on this level. As Christians we should never support a candidate that is in favor of child sacrifice. If he wont protect the freedoms of the smallest and most innocent among us how do we ever expect him to protect and stand for our conservative values. But really that is beside the point. We should not be putting our support behind someone

that loves what God hates. This is a very serious issue. It isn't just a political bias or agenda it is life and death. Abortion isn't the equivalent to taxation or gun control it is the destruction of 1.2 million lives a year. It is the number one killer of Americans. Twice that of heart disease. Proverbs 6:17 says that God hates hands that shed innocent blood. Abortion is hated by our Creator. But not only abortion itself but the hands that commit such things. That is a pretty strong statement. We should be conscience of the moral standing of who we vote for. They represent us. Lets make sure that they hate the things God hates.

Just the Beginning...

I am sure that there is more we could do but this is a start. I hope that it will be a help. Maybe you have another idea. I will be writing another post on what to say when people challenge our biblical stand next time. There are some really common statements that “pro-choice” people will say and they all have simple answers. I know that this can seem overwhelming but I hope that I can help encourage someone to take the first step in speaking out for the unborn.
